SMVT Railway Station to Nearest Metro Connectivity

If you are travelling in or out of Bengaluru by train, and your departure or arrival station is SMVT Bengaluru (SMVB), you are probably wondering:  how do I get there using the Bangalore Metro?

Being one of the newest railway stations in town, it is a modern and less crowded station compared to Majestic or KR Puram on the metro line, but it is yet to catch up with these stations in terms of direct metro access. But it is not tricky to reach either. In fact, once you know the way, it is quite simple.

Let us walk you through it.

First, What Is SMVT and Where Is It?

SMVT is an abbreviation used for Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal. It is a railway station situated in the Baiyappanahalli area in East Bengaluru. If you have been to Indiranagar and nearby places, you are basically near to this station.

This station was built to reduce the pressure on other busy railway hubs. Trains from many parts of India — including Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Chennai and more — now use SMVT as their Bengaluru stop.

The only thing is: the metro does not go directly to SMVT. But the next best thing? It passes very close to it.

So, What’s the Nearest Metro Station to SMVT?

That would be Baiyappanahalli Metro Station. It is the last stop on the Purple Line of the Namma Metro, and it is the closest you can get to SMVT using the metro.

  • Metro Station Name: Baiyappanahalli
  • Metro Station Code: BPHL
  • Distance to SMVT: Around 1.2 km
  • Time by Auto or Cab: Just about 5 to 10 minutes
  • Time on Foot: 15 to 20 minutes, though not ideal if you have luggage

You can find autos and cabs easily at the metro exit. There is no shortage of transport.

Reaching SMVT by Metro from Different Parts of the City

This whole trip should take you about 40 minutes, depending on the time of day.

Tips for a Smooth Trip to Bangalore

  • Carry change or pay with UPI — most autos in this area accept digital payments now
  • Pre-book cabs during early morning or late night hours to avoid waiting
  • Avoid peak hours if you can — the metro can get very crowded around 9 AM and 6 PM
  • Use Google Maps — it gives accurate metro timings and directions
  • Keep your luggage compact — it makes moving in and out of metro stations easier

Bangalore’s traffic tests patience, especially if it happens to be peak time. That is why the metro can be a handy mode of transport to or from SMVT Bengaluru Railway Station.

When Does the Metro Run?

The Namma Metro starts pretty early and runs late enough to cover most train schedules.

  • First Train: Around 5:00 AM
  • Last Train: Around 11:00 PM
  • Frequency:

    • Every 5 to 6 minutes during peak hours
    • Every 8 to 10 minutes during non-peak hours

Metro coaches are usually clean and well-maintained. If you travel outside peak times (say between 10 AM and 4 PM), you will probably find plenty of space.

Can You Walk from Baiyappanahalli Metro Station to SMVT?

Yes, you technically can. It’s just over one kilometre, so walking is possible if one is travelling light and the weather also appears fine.

The route, however, is quite inconvenient. There are no proper footpaths all along the way, and it could get a little tiring if one is carrying bags. Quick auto-rickshaw or cab is a better alternative, honestly speaking.

Though there is no metro station located exactly inside SMVT yet, the nearby Baiyappanahalli Metro Station perfectly connects with it. With an auto or cab for a short distance toward the end of the journey, one can avoid traffic and have a peaceful time.
